She answers to "Heather," "Lady Shaq," and after
this season add, "Buffalo News Player of the Year."
When it came to play underneath the basket, there was no equal this season to
Heather Turner, a 6-foot center for Mount Mercy. Her coaches nicknamed her Lady
Shaq because she controlled the middle in her league much the same way Shaquille
O'Neal, the 7-foot-1, 340-pound Los Angeles Lakers all-star, does in his.
"That name I got last year from my coaches," said Turner. "They said I played
like Shaq, always going to the boards and going back up with it. And I'm one of
the bigger girls in the league. Being compared to Shaq is great. I watch them
and see what he's doing. He's a great player."
While she turned in plenty of impressive individual performances, she was most
satisfied by what her team did this season -- reaching the Class A Catholic
state finals and repeating as Monsignor Martin Association champions.
The Magic reached the state final game largely because of Turner, who had 23
points and 16 rebounds in a semifinal victory over Notre Dame Academy of Staten
Island.
She had 22 double-doubles in Mercy's 28 games, averaging 16 points and 11
rebounds.
"If I coach for 30 more years, I'll never have another kid like her," coach
Chris Massey said. "We lost two first-team all-Western New York players last
season and Heather put us on her back and we rode her all the way to the Class A
state championship. She got beat down, got a bite mark, got pinched, held down,
but had big games every single night."
Turner has made an official visit to Wagner College and she will visit
Manhattan.
The 20th annual All-Western New York team was chosen by The Buffalo News with an
assist from the area's top coaches, area college coaches and officials.
Nardin senior Jamie Wolff made the first team for the second year in a row.
Turner and Wolff are joined on the first team by junior
Mary Kate Wilson of
Mount Mercy, senior Kourtney Troutman of Pine Valley and junior
Shannon
Scarselletta of Nichols.
First team
Jamie Wolff, Nardin: Wolff has played four years of varsity basketball
and played on the area's best AAU team, but those weren't her only influences.
"I learned everything from playing in my driveway with my dad, brothers and
neighbors," she said.
Wolff learned her lessons well as she finished her career with school records
for most points (1,124) and three-pointers (200). She's the first player from
Nardin to reach 1,000 points. She had 86 threes this year, helping her score 427
points (18 ppg.) She shared MVP honors of the Monsignor Martin Association with
Turner.
Wolff has impressive shooting range, and an unrivaled cross-over dribble. She
carries a 94 average and was named to the WNY All-Academic team. She's
considering St. Lawrence, the University of Rochester and St. John Fisher.
Kourtney Troutman, Pine Valley: No doubt Troutman is this season's most
accomplished player with a second New York State title to her credit. Troutman
was named the state's Class D Player of the Year for the second year in a row
after she scored 17 points in the state finals against Madrid-Waddington.
Troutman ends her career fourth on the Lady Panthers' all-time scoring list with
1,422 points, and she ranks seventh all-time in single-season points with 436.
She averaged 16.8 ppg, 8.6 rebounds and 5.1 steals as her team finished 25-1.
Perhaps her most impressive stat: 580 career steals.
"What makes her great is her ability to rise to the occasion," said coach Tim
Nobles. "She is not the best shooter, ballhandler, rebounder, or passer that we
have ever had at Pine Valley. But she has always gotten the big score, rebound,
steal, or made the big pass. She gets the job done, especially in the big
games."
She carries a 96 average and was named to the WNY All-Academic team. She's
considering Elmira College and William & Smith.
Mary Kate Wilson, Mount Mercy: Her ability to score inside and out and play
ferocious defense makes Wilson the most complete player in Western New York.
She scored plenty of big baskets and always guarded the other team's top scorer.
She averaged 14 points and had a 30-point game against Holy Angels.
"Some can't believe she's only a junior because she plays so physical and she
has senior leadership," said coach Massey. "This is a kid who loves to be on the
floor, loves to play the game and loves to play defense."
She's a National Honor Society member who carries a 98 average.
Shannon Scarselletta, Nichols: She can shoot the 15- to 17-footer and also goes
to the boards strong. She was third team All-WNY last year. Playing on a
tender ankle most of the season, Scarselletta was the leading scorer for a
Viking team that finished 14-9 and finished runner-up in the state in the
Alliance of Independent Schools Tournament. She averaged 16 points, 13 rebounds
and five blocks.
She had a 25-point game against Holy Angels and earned MVP honors of the PAL
Cataract Tournament in Niagara Falls. "She's a player," said coach Bob Torgalski.
"She's strong, athletic, she's got a couple good moves inside. She can sky.
She's a good rebounder, and she goes back up strong."
She scored 1,400 on the SAT exam and is ranked in top 10 in her class.
Second team
Maria Scaffidi, Holy Angels: Her steady backcourt play led Angels to a berth in
the New York State Class C Catholic finals and a 22-7 record. . . . Scaffidi was
at her best in the big games as she tallied a team-high 16 points in the
season-ending loss to Our Lady of Mercy at St. John's University. She averaged
13.3 points and three assists per game . . . Also named to the WNY All-Academic
team. . . . "She is so fast and so quick, she changes direction and she's
fearless on the drive," said coach Fran Snyder. "In one of the Nardin games they
counted and she hit the floor 15 times."
Gabbie Richardson, Amherst: Used her strength, instincts and skills to dominate
the middle. . . . Had a season-high 34 points against West Seneca West in the
Indians' Tip-Off Tournament. Was named MVP at West Seneca and Mount St. Mary
Tournaments. . . . A starter since eighth grade, she enters senior year with
1,361 points. Scored 486 points this season averaging 22.1 points, 12.8
rebounds. . . . "Gabbie's biggest thing this year was she was in shape. She
could run every single game for us," said coach Joanna Tower, whose team
finished 15-7. "Her conditioning was awesome."
Maryjane DiCenzo, Springville: The Griffins won 18 of 20 games and the ECIC III
for the second year in a row with DiCenzo at the point. . . . Three-year starter
who averaged 12.2 points, 6.8 assists, 6.8 steals and 7.3 rebounds. Holds school
records for career assists (353), steals (408) and is second all-time in points
(849). . . . Carries a 94.8 average and was named to the WNY All-Academic team.
Considering Miami of Ohio and St. John Fisher for business. . . . "One of her
strongest assests is (she) sees the floor so well," said coach Liz Strait. "She
does not pick up her dribble until she has to, and she does very well against
double teams. Just an all-around player and a go-getter."
Allison Boehm, Sacred Heart: A lot was asked of Boehm this season and she
delivered. . . . Led her team to an 18-5 record, which included wins over Mount
Mercy and Nardin. . . . Was MVP of Tournaments at Iroquois and Sweet Home.
Despite being the obvious go-to person on her team, she averaged 16.4 points and
6.7 rebounds . . . Carries a 3.3 average and was named to the WNY All-Academic
team. Considering St. John Fisher and SUNY Cortland for sports management.
Sarah Bogardus, Fredonia: The CCIAC I Player of Year and broke her own school
mark for most points in a season with 484. . . . Averaged 19.3 points and nine
rebounds. "Almost all of her points last year came from within six feet. But
she's made a concentrated effort to improve her outside game," said coach Carol
Zirkle. . . . Had 19 points in nonleague loss to Mount Mercy. . . . Fredonia's
17-8 record included the Section VI Class B title and a berth in the Far West
Regionals. . . . Carries a 92 average.
Third team
Lizzie Roth, Mount Mercy: One of a few Mercy players with four years of varsity
experience. Helped lead her team to three straight Msgr. Martin Association
titles and four straight appearances in the state Catholic final four. Averaged
10 points, including a 22-point game against Nardin. Led Magic with 40
three-pointers. . . . Has committed to Genesee Community College, where her
sister, Christine, played. . . . "Liz has played with a world of talent, and
this year she finally got her turn to lead the team. I often call her my
assistant coach," said coach Massey. . . . Carries a 93 average.
Cierra Hawkins, Hutch-Tech: Poured in 30 points in a 65-63 win over Bennett in a
game that ultimately decided the Canisius Cup championship. . . . Gifted athlete
who makes everyone around her better. . . . Averaged 19.5 points, 14.5 rebounds
and shot 71 percent from the free-throw line as the Engineers finished 14-2. A
junior who has started since eighth grade. . . . Carries a 93 average. . . .
Also excels in volleyball.
Molly Scholla, Olean: With Scholla in the starting lineup the past three years,
the Huskies never lost in CCIAC I. . . . Point guard who averaged 12.2 points
and five assists as her team finished 20-4. . . . Among her many big games was
21 points (five three-pointers) against Springville in the Class A-2 final.
Against Nardin in the Lockport Tournament consolation, she had 17 points (five
threes). . . . Carries a 97 average and was named to the WNY All-Academic team.
Considering John Carroll.
Meghan Macguire, Grand Island: Macguire had plenty of big games, but none were
bigger than the 17 points, including four three-pointers, she had against Olean
in the Class A final. "When Meghan played well, we all played well," said coach
Jenepher Banker. "She made us go." . . . Averaged 10 points and five assists
while collecting 37 three-pointers. . . . Carries a 3.97 average.
Megan Hathaway, Niagara-Wheatfield: Fun-to-watch point guard who drives the lane
fearlessly. . . . Surpassed 1,000 points as a junior. Averaged 21.3 ppg., 6.3
rpg. 4.1 assists, 3.7 in steals. "She would get 5-6 offensive rebounds a game.
She had a knack of knowing where the ball was coming off," said coach Diane
Fegatilli. "She's got a really quick first step, and she explodes to the
basket." . . . The Falcons (11-12) finished strong with sectional wins over
Frontier and Orchard Park. . . . Three-year starter. Also plays soccer and runs
track.
Fourth team
Saramarie Bukas, Holy Angels: Thanks to Bukas, the Angels haven't had to worry
about their inside game for the past three seasons. . . . Signed early with
California University of Pennsylvania, an NCAA Division II school south of
Pittsburgh. The Vulcans (35-1) won the national championship last month . . .
Despite double and some time triple teams, averaged 15 ppg., 9.5 rpg. and five
blocks. Had 18 points in the Angels' 56-50 win over Mount Mercy.
Katie Miranto, North Tonawanda: Terrific talent who carried the load for the
Lady Jacks, averaging 16.1 ppg. Finished with 1,115 points in 82-game career. .
. . Four-year starter who holds school records for most assists in one season
(95), most steals in one game (15). Has signed a partial softball scholarship
with Canisius College. . . . Also named to the WNY All-Academic team.
Janessa Vandegriff, Roy-Hart: Led Lady Rams to the school's first sectional
title. The Class B-1 champions finished with a school record 20 wins against
three losses. . . . Two-guard who had a school-record nine threes in a 33-point
effort against Barker. Averaged 15.6 ppg and had a school record 69 threes. . .
. "She's the best shooter I've ever seen -- boy or girl," said coach Don Baker.
"She's always in the gym working on some part of her game."
Cheryl Kindzia, Williamsville North: Helped the Spartans win back-to-back ECIC I
titles averaging 15.2 ppg., 10 rpg. and three blocks. . . . Finishes her career
as North's all-time leading scorer with 991 points. She also holds single season
records for rebounds (226), blocks (88) and points (30). . . . Considering St.
John Fisher and Fredonia State.
Kelly Regan, Nichols: Coaches from New Hampshire, St. Joseph's, Stony Brook and
Columbia came to Nichols to see the 6-3 junior play, and she didn't disappoint.
. . . . Netted 20 points against Nazareth, which finished ranked No. 3 in the
state in Class B. Averaged 12 ppg. and 10 rpg. . . . "She's an extremely hard
worker," said coach Bob Torgalski. "She runs the court well for a big girl." . .
. Honor roll student.
